To contribute to the well-being of society
through precision measurement technologies
From nanoparticles to buildings,
measurement is an essential technology in all manufacturing sectors around the world.
Mitutoyo is a leading company in the precision measurement industry and a comprehensive manufacturer of precision measuring instruments with more than 5,500 products, which is the largest number in the industry.
Our primary mission is to support our client's business development and contribute globally to the advancement of industry and technology, which is accomplished by solving precision measurement challenges and continuing to improve and refine our precision measurement technologies.
For that purpose, since our founding, we have consistently continued to provide solutions that solve measurement problems for customers and create new value that is possible by going beyond measurement.
Some examples include development of optimum testing environments, process improvement for on-site applications of our technologies, and the realization of a factory that does not sleep through the utilization of automated measurement data.
Measurement is one of the essential parts of manufacturing.
Therefore, there are unlimited possibilities, and we can continuously challenge ourselves.

Mitutoyo, from early on, has developed its businesses globally.
Currently, we have offices in 31 countries and have a network of distributors in more than 80 countries.
In contrast to other Japanese companies, we focused on the North American market early on.
We established the American affiliated company MTI Corporation in New York in 1963, followed by the arrival of our products in the former West Germany the following year.
Based on the results of our independent market research, we established our first sales company in Europe in Dusseldorf in 1968.
As of 2020, we have 27 sales and service offices including dealers in North America and Latin America, and 38 in Europe.
As the first base in Asia, we established MAP (Mitutoyo Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd.) in Singapore in 1978.
We established Mitutoyo Taiwan in 1987, followed by a service company in Korea in 1994, and a manufacturing plant in China in 1998.
Following Europe and America, we earned the trust of the communities where we operate in Asia, and as of 2020, we have 50 offices in Asia and provide services for customers.
Thus, we have established a global network from early on. We also focus on strengthening management rooted in the community so we can offer solutions rooted in each community and culture quickly.
Beginning as a small research laboratory founded by Yehan Numata in Kamata, Tokyo in 1934,
Mitutoyo grew to the global company it is today.
Although the size has changed, his original aspirations “to contribute to the peace of the world and the of people through business” remain unchanged.
Below is the history of Mitutoyo with an inheritance of aspirations that crosses centuries.
1934
Establishment of Mitutoyo Manufacture - Domestic production of the micrometer
In 1934, Yehan Numata decided to domestically produce micrometers, which had until that time been entirely imported. Thus, Mitutoyo had taken its first historical step.
In 1936, the company name was changed to Mitutoyo Manufacture. In the same year, the first mass-produced lot of 100 was completed. Of these, only 17 were deemed satisfactory and the rest were buried at the site of the factory.
This was a testimony to their determination that there would be no lenience when it came to testing and quality and performance would never be compromised.
1954
Global Operation - Start of exports and the establishment of subsidiaries overseas
Mitutoyo was looking overseas since its foundation. Yehan Numata represented Japan at the first International Metrology Conference and Exhibition held in the United Stated in 1954. On this occasion, he experienced the worldwide progress of precision measuring instruments and name recognition of Mitutoyo.
Based on this experience, Mitutoyo has established its first overseas base in the United States in 1963, followed by the establishment of a distribution subsidiary in Germany in 1968. Since then, Mitutoyo expanded its network to countries around the world, including in South America, Europe, and Asia.
1987
A New Generation of Mitutoyo - Leading the world in digitization
From the second half of the 1970s, evolution of measuring instruments across the world was in digitalization. Manufacturers were in a fiercely competitive technological race toward digitization in small size and at low cost.
In 1978, Mitutoyo launched the digital measuring instrument Digimatic Series. It became a hit product, dominating domestic and international markets. Mitutoyo’s efforts since then have continually improved its lineup to lead the industry in digitization.
In 1987, the company was renamed to Mitutoyo Corporation as it took a new step to meet the 21st century.
2020
A New Horizon - A solution company supporting manufacturing sites
With the advent of IoT and other state-of-the-art capabilities, Mitutoyo faces a transition period of evolution and innovation, as well as an ongoing transformation of how measurements are used. Mitutoyo is responding to changes, at the same time, with focus on foreseeing needs which have not yet taken shape and offering solutions as never imagined by customers.
Going beyond our role as a measuring instrument manufacturer, we will be a reliable partner who continually provides new ideas and supports your operations on the manufacturing floors.
