MICROCORD LEGEX Series - Ultra-high Accuracy CNC Coordinate Measuring Machines
Realizing World-leading Measurement Accuracy of 0.28 µm

  Mitutoyo Corporation (Headquarters: Takatsu-ku, Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture; President: Toru Nakagawa) has manufactured the MICROCORD LEGEX, an ultra-high accuracy CNC coordinate measuring machine (CMM) developed as one of the next generation of CMMs, since 1998. The current model, first sold in January 2014, is earning considerable international praise.

  However, the unceasing advance of scientific and industrial technologies is driving demand for significant improvements in high-accuracy manufacturing. Particular examples include applications such as ultra-precise molds, components and aspherical lenses in the automotive, aviation and medical instrument industries, and calibration of master gauges for research institutes. To meet these increasing needs Mitutoyo has looked at the question of accuracy afresh, from the elemental technology level upward, with the aim of eliminating all possible sources of measurement error. As a result the company has developed the LEGEX 4, which far surpasses conventional CMM performance to deliver world-leading accuracy in length measurement of E0, MPE = (0.28+L/1000) μm.

Fixed-bridge structure with moving table
•  Fixed-bridge, moving-table design retained for its superior performance.

Sources of static and dynamic error minimized to realize world-leading measurement accuracy of 0.28 µm
•  Main-unit structure developed to minimize vibration and deformation caused during operation.
•  Mitutoyo-developed control equipment completely changed, with the application of advanced control technologies enabled by the
    use of new algorithms, which has minimized static and dynamic error sources to achieve high-accuracy measurement.
•  Improved narrow-range straightness has increased scanning measurement accuracy.
•  Using structural design that factors-in thermal stability, plus low expansion crystallized glass scales and temperature
   compensation functionality, achieves an accuracy guarantee temperature range of 18–22°C, which helps reduce maintenance
   costs of the measurement environment.

Base design
•  The base is made from spheroidal graphite (ductile) cast iron to a sealed-structure design that provides high rigidity and vibration
    attenuating characteristics.
•  Thorough stress analysis was conducted using FEM structural analysis simulations to minimize deformation caused by such
   factors as load variation, and therefore ensure outstanding geometric accuracy.

High-rigidity structure and feed mechanisms increase accuracy and improve cycle times
•  Feed mechanisms are made highly rigid.
•  High-rigidity air bearings are used.
•  Final finish on guideways hand lapped to achieve the best narrow-range straightness.

Focus on usage environment
•  A thermally symmetric structure and full covers around the main body are used to reduce possible impact of changes in ambient
    temperature and reduce distortion in the measurement space. Improving ambient temperature robustness has eliminated the
    need for ultra-precise constant temperature controllers for fine control of temperature variations, which helps reduce installation
    and maintenance costs.
•  Standard inclusion of vibration-damping unit to control external vibration.

6. Design creates uniformity across series
•  Commercial strength has been designed into the CMMs by using a uniform image across the entire series.
